The primary function of a truck’s A/C and heat is to regulate internal temperature, and allow the driver to experience comfort while driving. To do this, various components of the system have to work in unison, such as the interior control panel, the compressor, refrigerant, the evaporator, the blower motor, the expansion valve, and condenser.

For cooling, the compressor helps raise the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant. After which the receiver and dryer removes dirt and excessive moisture from the air blown into the truck.

On the other hand, heat is produced when the truck’s engine coolant is circulated through a heater cabin. With the fan blowing over this hot heater cabin, the air is made warm.

  • Refrigerant Leak A major contributing factor to A/C and heat fault is a leak in your truck’s refrigerant. The refrigerant circulates through the truck’s ventilation system and it is the chemical responsible for alternating between liquid and gas states of moisture. When there is a leak (caused by rust, an old hose, or a punctured evaporator) the refrigerant is released into the atmosphere, thereby hindering it from performing its function.
  • Blocked Expansion Valve The expansion valve transfers refrigerant into the evaporator. When the expansion valve is clogged with dirt and contaminants, the refrigerant is restricted, which results in insufficient cool and warm air from the vents
  • Bad Blower Motor When the blower motor responsible for pushing air through the A/C into the car compartment is bad, there could be a problem within the ventilation system. Signs of a bad blower motor are a weird noise from the passenger's side floorboard, a burning smell from the A/C vent, and weak airflow from the A/C and heat vents.

So, when you crank up your A/C to the highest level, you’re burning fuel to operate it. You need the gas to power the alternator to send the signal to the electrical system.
